Decency: The Code of Life

Rooted in him, Refined by his Standard

It is imperative to acknowledge that our understanding of decency is often biased and incomplete. Many of us do not fully grasp the depth of this word or the profound impact it has on life.

Decency goes far beyond outward appearance; it is more than what the physical eye can see. It is a matter of the heart — an inward character expressed through outward actions. As the word suggests, decency is not abstract but a way of life — a character and behaviour that meet an acceptable standard. At its core lies responsibility: the ability to respond to what is right and required.

As human beings created by God, our understanding of responsibility — of what is and what is not — must begin and end with him. God alone is good, and he is the source of all that is right (Mark 10:18). This means our ability to respond rightly must flow from acknowledging God as our source. Our practice of decency must therefore be rooted in him — the One who calls us to love him with all our heart, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5).

When we surrender ourselves to God, we are shaped and conformed to his standards. Decency, then, is not about living up to our own preferences or society’s approval; it is about living up to his acceptance. He alone determines what is right, required, and pleasing — for he is the source (Romans 12:2).

True decency cannot exist outside of God’s acceptance. It is not what we choose to call it, nor is it defined by fashion, trends, or even upbringing. Decency is the character of God reflected in us — a life that meets his approval (Ephesians 5:1–2).

Whether we eat or drink, celebrate or marry, dress up or stay in, speak or act, love or believe — in all things, let the decency of God be expressed through us. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Let us live not as the unwise — careless about how our appearance, words, or attitudes may influence others — but with a gentle and humble spirit (Ephesians 5:15–16). Let us be mindful that our desire to be seen, admired, or to trend should never cause others to stumble (Romans 14:13). With meekness of heart and sincerity of faith, let decency be our code of life.

Reflection Point:

Decency is not defined by appearance, fashion, or culture. It is the visible expression of God’s invisible character working in us.

Key Verse:

“Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” — Philippians 1:27 (NRSV)
